The 8th and 9 May have many names: the end of World War II, anniversary of the German surrender, the end of the Great Patriotic War, Liberation Day, Victory Day, Tag des Sieges über den Faschismus – or simply: Djen Popedy. In Russia the victory over German fascism is celebrated on the 9th of May with impressing parades and manifestations. Record high traffic from Murmansk to Finland and Norway

The customs authorities in Murmansk have published the numbers of border crossings during the long weekend last week. This public holiday began already Tuesday afternoon. After three working days in the beginning of this week, another long weekend starts on Wednesday afternoon. The holidays resulted in heavy traffic at the three border stations between Murmansk, Finland and Norway.

The External and Public Relations Department of the Bank of Russia informed on Thursday that the country’s international currency and gold reserves are down 6.1 billion USD or app.1.2 percent since 12 April to a volume of 515.2 billion USD as of 19 April 2013.
Governor: Rusal aluminum smelter in Karelia will not be closed

The governor of the Russian Republic of Karelia, Alexander Hudilainen, said on Tuesday that they have managed to find a positive solution to continue production of aluminum at the plant Nadvoitsky in Karelia. The factory that was built back in the early 1950s, is part of the company Rusal, which is owned by Oleg Deripaska, one of the wealthiest businessmen in Russia.
Russia's foreign trade in 1st quarter 2013: Exports fall, imports increase

Russia's exports in the first quarter of this year declined by 4.6 percent to 125.7 billion USD. This is stated in a report from the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia.
Putin signed a law banning smoking in public places

A new anti-smoking law shall come into effect from 1 June 2013 in the Russian Federation. The law, which will ban about smoking in public places, passed the Parliament (State Duma) on 12 February 2013 and was approved by the Federation Council on 20 February this year. I will be introduced in stages over several years.

Federal Watchdog for use of natural resources imposed a veto against LNG harbor plans in Teriberka

The State Service for Supervision of the use of natural resources in Russia (Rosprirodnadzor) has imposed a veto against plans to build a sea port for the export of LNG from Teriberka. This was reported by the Murmansk-based news service b-port.com on Thursday.
Inflation in Russia in week 16 at 0.2 percent

Between 9 and 15 April 2013 the inflation in Russia amounted to 0.2 percent, according to the country's statistics service Rosstat.
Still hope for Shtokman with Norwegian participation?

According to the Norwegian website E24! - which publishes an article from Teknisk Ukeblad - Statoil has not given up hopes for a possible participation in the large Shtokman project in the Russian part of the Barents Sea. The Norwegian energy giant assumes in this case, a new technological solution. The new option that will make the Shtokman project more profitable would be a floating LNG plant.
Russia has opened visa application centers in Oslo and Kirkenes

The trend to outsourcing of visa services continues: In late March, Russia opened privately owned visa centers in Oslo and Kirkenes, which take care of visa applications for travels to Russia. Last year, Norway had opened a visa center in Murmansk. Visas centers require an additional handling fee of 250 NOK - thus increasing prices for Russian visas in relation to earlier. The Norwegian and Finnish visa centers in Murmansk take 21 euro as service fee.
FIBA & NBA Weekend trip to wilderness camp near Lovozero 27- 28 April

IMF expects inflation in Russia will be higher than official forecast

The International Monetary Fund expects that inflation in Russia in the end of 2014 will exceed the official forecast of the Russian Central Bank. Officially, it is estimated an inflation in size between 4 and 5 percent. IMFs permanent representative in Russia, Odd Per Brekk, told this to journalists on Wednesday.
Russia's government is preparing new legislation on the development of small and medium businesses

The Russian government will submit a bill to parliament ("State Duma") to encourage the development of small and medium enterprises. A document was signed by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. Among other things it will become easier for foreign nationals to own Russian companies.
