Russia's dream of developing their own hybrid car has come a step closer to realization. The construction of the first Russian car manufacturer to produce cars of the new generation has started just outside St. Petersburg. The new car company is owned by the well-known Russian multi-billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, the leader of Oneksim Group. There are already over 100,000 pre-orders for the innovative Yo-cars.
To start with, the new car brand Yo will offer three models: a crossover, a 5-door hatchback and a mini-van. Prices range from 10,000 to 15,000 USD. The hope of experts is that the innovative hybrid models will lead the Russian automotive industry into a new era.
A Yo-prototype was already tested by Prime minister Vladimir Putin. According to the car producer already more than 100,000 cars are pre-ordered. Most popular is the crossover model. Among the clients is the speaker of the Murmansk Regional Duma Evgeny Nikora, writes barentsnova.com.
Currently there are around 240 cars per 1,000 adults in Russia, while the figure for the United States is 800 cars per 1,000 adults, according to news service Russia Today.
But in line with economic growth, the Russian market is increasing with high speed. Boston Consulting Group estimates that the Russian car market may be the world's sixth largest in 2020 with a turnover of 4 million cars a year. This will happen partly through cooperation with foreign partners, modernization and increasing local production.
It is considered that Yo will be competitive compared to similar cars in this segment from Japan and Europe. The cars will in addition to hybrid technology also have other innovative features such as 3G internet and Russia's own navigation system GLONASS.
